Earthquake in Indonesia: very serious toll, devastating images

The toll of the strong earthquake that hit the main island of the Indonesian archipelago, that of Java, where the capital Jakarta is also located, has risen to 56 dead and about 700 injured in Indonesia.

Earthquakes occur frequently throughout the Indonesian archipelago, but they are rarely felt in Jakarta.

Indonesia, a vast archipelago of more than 270 million people, is often hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis because of its location on the so-called "ring of fire", an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific basin.
